21: WON WAY

Description

A Tribute to Roberto Clemente, the first Hispanic Baseball Player and a Great Man who died living his beliefs. Please see the score notes for much much much.

Disfrute!

The nature of "tribute" is fascinating because once you begin really paying homage to anything or anyone or any assemblage of truly great people, there is no end. Kakehashi: That We Might Live and Last World Standing are such examples.

After writing 21: Won Way, a tribute to Roberto Clemente... and for those of you too young to know who this is, please read about his Life... more Music came. First the Romanza para Roberto, and later the Pasodobles para Santa Cecelia (patron saint of Music) y los Heroes de Espana, of which Roberto may definitely be included.

21: Won Way, in both versions, the stand-alone version, or the version preceded by the Romanza para Roberto is a tribute to Roberto Clemente, his Hispanic origins, and as always, with a dramatic, Heroic-Romantic "Stormworks" orchestration.

A WALK ON THE WATER

Description

An off-stage alto vocalist calls to us. We respond. The new-to-our-idiom colours join with the alto "muse" and beckon us in new ways. Through struggle and adventure, we finally arrive at the moment of "connection". And when we do, we can "walk on the water".

Godspeed!

HAJJ

Description:

This work is offered as a tribute to the faithful who each year make the HAJJ, a pilgrimage to Mecca... and to all those who make each day a new step in Life's journey.

HAJJ is about the moment before the real Prayer begins. It is fraught with intrigue, and sidetracked adventure, moments of introspection and exuberant dance! Many contrasting sections offer the ensemble its opportunity to explore superimposed styles and varied colours. The work may also be rendered as a combined work for Band of the 3rd Millennium™ and Jazz Ensemble. The intent of this work suggests something more global, more akin to all of our Natures. We are, it seems, always involved in a going forth. Like a pilgrim, the voyage begins with full knowledge of what to expect. And then, just like a pilgrim, when the moment of Truth arrives... it is always so much more than what was hoped for. To this journey, this quest, this pilgrimage, I leave you this piece... HAJJ.

The addition of HAJJ to the repertoire is made possible by the joint effort and commitment of many dedicated individuals. My many thanks to these champions of Music and Music Education.

"Dear Steve, I never had the chance to talk to you about Last World Standing world Standing. I have played your Last World Standing three times in the last week. What Brilliance! what work! a true masterpiece and the work of a musical genius!" Tom Walsh, Executive Producer, EnterAktion Studios

"Dear Stephen! Great, wunderbar!! It¥s a special sample of very emotional music. It¥s very extraordinary!! I guess thats a new step in instrumentation and arrangement of your great works, but each composition is typical for "Stephen Melillo"!! Very deaply sound, the track with Martin Kiener sounds like an Symphony Orchestra. Sorry, I¥m not able to describe it in english, but this CD takes the Concert Band Music in a new dimension. In my opinion, the great bands and band directors like this music and the people in the concert halls would be touched by such wunderfull music all over the world!!!!! Godspeed" P.S. The Beginning of our last concert with SBO Ried an 26.10. was with your opus 1... and now, it is on Chapter 13. That`s great of you, to give your first, wunderfull work to your new CD!! Gerhard Reischel, Conductor Landesmusikschule Leonding, Austria

"Composer Melillo is gifted and blessed with a God-given talent he gives and shares with the world. When one listens to his music, an intense spiritual statement immerses one into his beautiful world of musical expression. Melilloís compositions are different from all other composers! Immediately one is captivated by the depth and soul of his craft. I encourage you to listen and view his Last World Standing. This is a monumental piece of music that delivers a most profound musical experience about our life and the wars that we have lived through. IN A CAUSE CALLED "GLORIOUS"

Click Here to View Perusal Score

Description

In a Cause Called "Glorious" was composed in commemoration of the Bicentennial of West Point.

The United States Military Academy Band, the U.S. Army's oldest active band and the oldest unit at West Point traces its roots to the Revolutionary War... a Time when a once ragtag "band" of gallant patriots joined defiant and brave In a Cause Called "Glorious".

With exuberant exhilaration they set forth on the great American Adventure! From that moment on, many souls have trained to defend that first and noble principle. This work is humbly dedicated to the men and women, past and future, alive and sacrificed who gave and continue to give of themselves in the defense of Freedom. They are the modern-day Knights, a long gray line of Heroes serving in a perpetual cause called... "Glorious".

IN THE BEGINNING... (aka A WALK IN JURASSIC PARK)

Click Here to View Perusal Score

Description

Previously known as A WALK IN JURASSIC PARK, and still workable under that title, this piece represents the struggle between the intellectual and the visceral, the modern and the eternal, the cerebral and the explosively romantic. It calls for a large percussion section and explores many new colours while delivering a multilayered message. The work traces the Origin of the Species... and the potential for Man's ability to 'pass the paradigm'. Please visit the Score and Score Notes for more detailed information. This piece is from the STORMWORKS... Chapter THREE CD.

TIME TO TAKE BACK THE KNIGHTS! (aka The Chosen) Band or Orchestra

Click Here to View Perusal Score

Description

TIME TO TAKE BACK THE KNIGHTS!... or as titled by Conductor Maurice Hamers: THE CHOSEN! appears on the STORMWORKS... Chapter THREE CD.

What makes this piece challenging is the interplay of component forces, and the need to move seamlessly between, and sometimes merge differing styles of Music. The piece begins with a bluesy, airy sax solo, reminiscent of a "Harlem Nocturne." But when the brass come in, we are in a world of Tchaikowsky-like military calls mixed with Jazz. The varied ghost-like voices of Knights distant and past call to us in these brass figures.

Contrasting sections depict a blending of Americana with Middle Eastern, with serenity and triumphal nobility.
