Description

A Tribute to Roberto Clemente, the first Hispanic Baseball Player and a Great Man who died living his beliefs. Please see the score notes for much much much.

Disfrute!

The nature of "tribute" is fascinating because once you begin really paying homage to anything or anyone or any assemblage of truly great people, there is no end. Kakehashi: That We Might Live and Last World Standing are such examples.

After writing 21: Won Way, a tribute to Roberto Clemente... and for those of you too young to know who this is, please read about his Life... more Music came. First the Romanza para Roberto, and later the Pasodobles para Santa Cecelia (patron saint of Music) y los Heroes de Espana, of which Roberto may definitely be included.

21: Won Way, in both versions, the stand-alone version, or the version preceded by the Romanza para Roberto is a tribute to Roberto Clemente, his Hispanic origins, and as always, with a dramatic, Heroic-Romantic "Stormworks" orchestration.

Description

Potent, Straussian, Korngoldian orchestration,.. constantly changing colours and rhythmic drive take us through this swashbuckling tribute to Composer, ERICH WOLFGANG KORNGOLD!

The highly energized music is derived from the first 5 notes of the major scale. In addition to its programmatic power, ERICH is a wonderful teaching tool. The 2nd Movement, THE GIFT OF LOVE, is a romantic ballad, warm and giving.

There is also a Brass Quartet Version, and a Low Brass Choir Version.

Erich Wolfgang Korngold, born in Brynn, Austria (now Brno, Czechoslovakia), on May 29, 1897, has been called the last of the great Romantic composers. The son of eminent Austrian music critic Julius Korngold, he was a child prodigy who stunned the Viennese music world with his precocity as a composer.

At the age of ten, he played his "Gold" cantata for Gustav Mahler, who proclaimed him a genius and sent him to one of Austria's foremost teachers for advanced training. In 1910 the premiere of his ballet "Der Schneemann" -- which he had composed two years earlier -- created a sensation at the Vienna Court Opera.

The teenaged Korngold followed this with a Piano Trio and a Piano Sonata in E that Artur Schnabel championed. Other admirers included Puccini, who praised Korngold's 1916 opera VIOLANTA, and Richard Strauss, who described his reactions to Korngold's adolescent compositions as follows: "awe and fear: this firmness of style, this sovereignty of form, this individual expression, this harmonic structure -- it is really amazing."

Korngold composed the work for which he is now best known, the opera DIE TOTE STADT, when he was 20; its dual premiere in Hamburg and Cologne in 1920 secured his reputation throughout Europe. In 1928 a poll conducted by a Vienna newspaper ranked Korngold with Schoenberg as the two greatest living composers. Korngold's friend and collaborator, stage and film director Max Reinhardt, brought him to Hollywood in 1934.

He was ready to return home for the Vienna premiere of his fifth opera, DIE KATHRIN, when Hitler's troops marched into Austria and were greeted by cheering crowds. He remained in the United States, bringing members of his family out of Austria ahead of the wave of Nazi terror. For the next two decades Korngold composed music for films and the concert hall, including a Violin Concerto, introduced by Jascha Heifetz, and a Symphonic Serenade for strings, conducted by Wilhelm Furtwingler. Two of his film scores, for ANTHONY ADVERSE (1936) and THE ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD (1938), won Academy Awards. He passed on in Hollywood on November 29, 1957.

STORMNote: it was in the film ANTHONY ADVERSE, that Stephen Melillo first heard, as a young boy, the STORMChord! "Erich Korngold, far and beyond his history or critical acclaim is a man who I have come to Love and admire... because of his Music! In his outpouring I can hear the valiant stance against the un-Romantic. I hear him take on the mantle of honesty and sincerity and giving. He offered to us, the 'Gift of Love'. This piece, ERICH!... is a small and humble gift back to him. I hope that you and the kids will truly enjoy this "pointer" back to Erich Korngold, the man... and his much needed Music. Godspeed!"

Description

(This work was indirectly nominated for Pulitzer!)

IN A SERVICE BEYOND SELF was commissioned by The United States Air Force Band of the Golden West Captain Douglas Monroe, Commander & Conductor, In Tribute to the Efforts and Vision of Brigadier General Billy Mitchell.

General William Billy Mitchell (1879-1936) was the renowned pioneer of US air power and generally regarded as one of the most farsighted military leaders of his age. As Prometheus was burned at the stake for bringing the world fire, so was Billy court-martialed for his prophecy that Japan might cripple the US Navy at Pearl Harbor using air power. His was a voice in the wilderness, a man ahead of his Time. He was a forward thinking risk-taker whose reputation was not restored until after his passing.

In a Service Beyond Self is humbly dedicated to the Efforts and Vision of General Billy Mitchell and to all those who, like him, serve ideals which are beyond themselves.

Description

THE KNIGHT IS YOUNG was designed to launch the A Wish to the World Suite... and is the opening statement, fanfare and prelude on the A Wish to the World CD. This work falls within the grade 4+ - 5 range. It was composed for the Kentucky All-State Band 2000. It was also composed for similar situations, where either honor bands or region bands, etc, had unusually large instrumentation and needed Music. It was challenging for me to once again enter upon a situation where 4 oboists would be asked to read... and "tune"... one line of Music. This piece, while serving as still yet another movement in the A Wish to the World Suite, creates another option for conductors seeking a somewhat atypical opening statement... which utilizes larger forces of double reeds and brasses.

A Wish to the World is a series of pieces written to inspire the next generation of Heroes. These pieces can be played as a suite across the Music Program in the manner of THE FOUNTAINHEAD and STORMQUEST, or they can be rendered individually.

A Wish to the World is commissioned by Barry Wentz and the Alpena High School Symphonic Wind Ensemble with Ray Reynolds, Director of the Thunder Bay JHS Band, and Keith Hodsgon & The South Jersey Area Wind Ensemble, Mr. Larry White & The Rancho Buena Vista Wind Ensemble in California, Mr. Paul Holzen & the Parkway Northeast Middle School, and the Kentucky Music Educators Association.
