Description

For those of you familiar with WITHOUT WARNING, the opening of the STORMWORKS... Chapter One CD, GODSPEED! may be thought of as the triumphal counterpart!

It is the optionally written 3rd Movement to the piece: HONOR, COURAGE... COMMITMENT.

For so many years I have signed my letters in this way. Now, "Godspeed" has Music! It is a salutation of greetings and goodbye. Welcome to STORMWORKS... my friends... and Godspeed!

IN THE BEGINNING... (aka A WALK IN JURASSIC PARK)

in 3 movements

Description

Previously known as A WALK IN JURASSIC PARK, and still workable under that title, this piece represents the struggle between the intellectual and the visceral, the modern and the eternal, the cerebral and the explosively romantic. It calls for a large percussion section and explores many new colours while delivering a multilayered message. The work traces the Origin of the Species... and the potential for Man's ability to 'pass the paradigm'. Please visit the Score and Score Notes for more detailed information. This piece is from the STORMWORKS... Chapter THREE CD.

DAVID

in 4 movements

Description

Stephen's 800th, 4-movement work, DAVID... has many layers of meaning. True for all of the "storm" works, these layers have been extended to include the use of many new and fresh colours. DAVID is a dramatic work, calling for a boy-soprano or soprano-actress who can depict David, the boy before battle! DAVID is a work about Faith Triumphant!

David's faith brings down the insurmountable Goliath. The work is dedicated to Faith and Hope despite the untimely passings of friends and family.

TIME TO TAKE BACK THE KNIGHTS! (aka The Chosen) Band or Orchestra

Description

TIME TO TAKE BACK THE KNIGHTS!... or as titled by Conductor Maurice Hamers: THE CHOSEN! appears on the STORMWORKS... Chapter THREE CD.

What makes this piece challenging is the interplay of component forces, and the need to move seamlessly between, and sometimes merge differing styles of Music. The piece begins with a bluesy, airy sax solo, reminiscent of a "Harlem Nocturne." But when the brass come in, we are in a world of Tchaikowsky-like military calls mixed with Jazz. The varied ghost-like voices of Knights distant and past call to us in these brass figures.

Contrasting sections depict a blending of Americana with Middle Eastern, with serenity and triumphal nobility.

THE SPEECH OF ANGELS

Description

This somewhat haunting work is inspired by the phrase: "Music is well said to be the speech of angels."

The battle between Good and Evil often described in Storm Music now happens in the realm of the angels. New-to-our-idiom colours highlight the work. Off-stage madrigal choir and brass elements are just some of the sounds utilized to create that other-world Sonic Scape in which this piece comes to its uplifting conclusion.

David's faith brings down the insurmountable Goliath. The work is dedicated to Faith and Hope despite the untimely passings of friends and family.

WAIT of the WORLD

in 3 movements

Description

"While conducting Steve's Music, I often get the feeling that I am a part of something important, something really meaningful... timeless. His Music is an ode to Love and peace, a prayer to the Divine in all of us. May this document contribute to this purpose." -Maurice Hamers, Conductor

Music from the CD was premiered in Amsterdam's Concertgebouw on 21 April 1999. Many CD's were sold. All proceeds from the concert and STORMWORKS... Chapter THREE CD CD sales went to the Red Cross in support of the Refugees from Kosovo.

WAIT of the WORLD demands a commitment to the designated orchestration. The need for the expressive exceeds the technical demands of the work.

Each passing measure depicts Man's climb through the ages. An ancient architectural code based upon the architecture of the Great Pyramid at Giza reveals the ascent of Humanity through otherwise dark times. The trumpet heralds the new Millennium... where the children shall lead. Still, we await something which has already happened... perhaps something within us. In the final movement, every tonality is explored, save one. Finally, we reach that new key, a symbol of what we wait for while carrying on our shoulders... the weight of the world. Beyond these words, it is difficult for me to describe what for me, can only be said as Music. In this work, over 11 hours of Music called STORMWORKS reaches its temporary conclusion... and its new beginning. Great Music recreates the past, reveals the ever-present, and plots the Human Adventure soon to unfold." -SLM 1997

This piece is for symphonically minded Musicians of superior ability. It was commissioned by Major Maurice Hamers and The Marine Band of the Royal Netherlands Navy.
